500,745. Methanol. JOHNSON, G. W. (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.) Sept. 13, 1937, No. 24894. [Class 2 (iii)] Synthetic methanol is purified by treatment with a small quantity of chromic acid. The chromic acid in aqueous solution may be added at, a point in a distinction column at which the methanol has a considerable water content. In an example, aqueous methanol containing 40 per cent of methanol (obtained by the action of steam on dimethyl ether separated from crude synthetic methanol) is introduced at the 20th tray of a column of 65 trays and a 2 per cent aqueous solution of chromic acid is introduced at the 27th tray. Specification 311,468, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
