Abstract
A colloidal suspension of neutral calcium carbonate is obtained by kneading calcium oxide with water while keeping the temperature below 50 DEG C. to prepare a milky solution containing 10-30 per cent of calcium hydroxide, which is then diluted to a density of 30 DEG B<\>ae. It is then converted into basic carbonate by passing in a gas containing 15-50 per cent of carbon dioxide at a temperature below 35 DEG C. and continuing the action of the carbon dioxide until the basic carbonate is converted into neutral carbonate. Small quantities of acids, alkalis, water - soluble salts or polyhydric alcohols may be added during the slaking of the calcium oxide. Protective colloids, e.g. 1-20 per cent by weight of lecithin, castor oil soap, sulphonated castor oil soap, sulphonated oils, casein or an emulsion of rosin or synthetic resin may be added to the final dispersion, which may be dried. The product may be used to reinforce rubber, as a coating or filling material for paper, in sizes or as a toilet powder.
