Abstract

Fresh seaweed is ground wholly or in part to a degree of colloidal fineness and mixed with a small proportion of a water-soluble alkaline material or with the oxide, hydroxide, or carbonate of an alkaline-earth or heavy metal. This addition may take place before, during, or after the grinding. The pulp produced may be used directly as an agglutinant. The seaweed may be subjected to a preliminary pressing to remove entrained seawater, and may be boiled before grinding to remove soluble salts. At any stage in the production of the pulp a small amount of preservative may be added. Specification 56/79, [Class 70, India-rubber &c.], is referred to.
