Abstract

244,150. Latex Developments, Ltd., and Russell, R. Sept. 3, 1924. Water-paints.-A waterproof paint comprises (i) rubber, balata, or like latex preserved with ammonia or other anti-coagulant, (2) a casein compound comprising casein, phenol, ammonia, and borax or soda-ash or like alkali, and (3) a pigmentary constituent comprising a pigment or filler such as zinc white or lithopone, wet ground, preferably with part of the casein compound. The casein compound is made by mixing together a water solution of phenol and ammonia, adding powdered casein, borax, &c., and water and heating and stirring the whole. The pigmentary constituent is made by adding the lithopone, zinc white, &c. to some of the casein compound diluted with water and grinding the whole together. A suitable final composition consists of 16 pints of preserved latex, of 25 per cent solid content, 14 pints of casein compound, and 32 lbs. of pigmentary constituent. The proportions may be varied to give a final paste or liquid; in the former case some of the casein compound and preserved latex may be mixed together and used subsequently as a diluent.
