Abstract
491,876. Fountain pens. MENTMORE MANUFACTURING CO., Ltd., and JOHNSON, W. F. March 11, 1937, No. 7209. [Class 146 (iii)] In a fountain pen, the feed-bar is formed with a duct 1 leading to the nib but not communicating with the reservoir, a duct 5 communicating with the reservoir but not leading to the nib, and a duct 8 connecting the ducts 1, 5, a channel 9 communicating with the atmosphere and with one of the ducts 1, 5, 8, being also provided in the feed-bar, nib-section, or barrel. The ducts 1, 5 are formed with capillary grooves, while the duct 8, which is arranged to slope downwardly towards the nib in the position of use of the pen, may be a capillary groove of circular cross-section or be formed with capillary grooves preferably extending over only half of its circumference, or with a fine helical groove. The channel 9 may be arranged along or parallel to the axis of the feed-bar, or at an angle thereto, e.g. at right-angles to the duct 8, or may be formed in the wall of the nib-section or barrel; when it communicates with the duct 5, it may be a continuation thereof without the capillary grooves. When the channel 9 communicates with the duct 8, the latter may be arranged in two parts, the part connecting with the duct 5 being arranged to enter the channel 9 at a lower level than that connecting with the duct 1.
