Abstract
491,818. Knitting - machines ; ratchet gearing. CLARKE, A. V. April 24, 1937, No. 11798. [Class 74 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] The pattern drum shaft 91 of a knitting- machine is racked by means comprising a ratchet wheel 90, a pawl 102, a carrier 11 in which the pawl is slidably mounted, and a cam 104 for sliding the pawl within the carrier. The carrier is pivotally mounted about the axis of rotation of the cam 104 so that it can oscillate slightly as the pawl moves to-andfro. A spring 14 moves the pawl in its reverse direction. A screw 17 or other means may be provided for adjusting the length of the pawl. The cam 104 may rotate with the usual quadrant gear. The racking of the wheel is controlled by a bell-crank lever 101 engaging stops on a pattern chain 100 mounted on a sprocket 105 loose upon the shaft 91. The sprocket is rotated by a ratchet wheel 109 and pawl 108 similar to the pawl 102. A bluffing disc 110 also freely mounted on the shaft 91 serves to hold the pawl 108 from the chain ratchet 109 except when a gap in the disc comes beneath the pawl. A pawl 106 and ratchet wheel 107 serves to rack the drum shaft 91 at intervals through greater distances than the pawl 102. Specifications 485,925, 486,001, and 488,426 are referred to.
