Class 74(2) The cam 11 which effects relative shogging of the needle beds of a flat machine is controlled by a slide 1 carrying pawls 12, 13 which engage ratchets 16, 17 to effect reciprocation of racks 18, 19 to cause rotation of a pinion 9 connected to cam 11. Quadrant gears 29 controlled by patterning mechanism raise or lower bluffing members 15 which engage projections 12<1>, 13<1> to limit the engagement of pawls 12, 13 with ratchets 16, 17 thereby controlling the amount of rotation of cam 11. Pawl 12 is secured to a shaft 6 so as to rotate therewith and pawl 13 is freely rotatable on the shaft so that controlling members 22, 23, which are operated simultaneously, either render one or other of the pawls operative or inoperative as controlled by the dictates of the patterning mechanism.
