The position of the needle cams mounted on the carriage of a flat bed machine can be altered to vary the quality of the fabric. For this purpose each cam 25 is engaged by a roller 24 on the end of one arm 21 of a bell crank lever the other of which engages one of a number of projecting cams 13 secured to a rotatable disc 11. Rotation of the disc which is mounted on the carriage causes the bell crank lever to pivot and thereby raise or lower the cam 25. The disc 11 is rotated by pawl and ratchet mechanism operated by a lever arm 15 which engages a projection 26 at the end of the cam slide and which is movable into and out of an operative position under pattern control.
