Abstract

491,112. Centrifugal separators. MAIER, R. July 30, 1937, No. 21182. Convention date, July 30, 1936. [Class 23] Suspended particles are separated from gases by means of a rapidly rotating smooth pipe, closed at the end, immersed in the gaseous mixture ; the pipe causes the surrounding gas to rotate with it and the lightest zone immediately adjacent the pipe wall is continuously withdrawn either axially, or through perforations in the pipe wall, while the heavier parts remain in the mixture or accumulate at the wall of its container. In the form shown in Fig. 2 the end of the pipe is expanded to form a hollow cylinder 1a with a large number of peripheral passages 2a. The pipe, which is rotated by an electric motor 4b, passes through a chamber 3a and is supported in stuffing boxes 3b, 3c. A duct 5a connects a suction pump 5b to the chamber 3a. The cylinder 1a is rotated in the mixture and the light component is drawn by the pump 5b into the pipe through one set of peripheral perforations, then into the chamber 3a and duct 5a through another set. The degree of separation of the dust or gas components can be regulated by varying the speed of rotation of the cylinder 1a or the suction of the pump. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the container 1 is partly cylindrical and partly conical, and the rotating pipe consists of sieve cylinder 4 rotated by the motor 6. Impeller blades 8 at the top of the cylinder draw the separated light component through the sieve and discharge it through the pipe 9. In a modification the container drum 1, Fig. 5, has an inlet 2 and encloses a three stage separator. The first two stages have drums with sieve walls 7, 7<1> and the third stage has a drum with a thick wall 7<11> with tubular passages. Impeller blades 8, pass the light component from the first separation to the second stage, and blades 8<1> pass it from the second to the third stage. The heavier components may be drawn off by the outlets 3, 3<1>. In a further modification the material supplied is passed through disintegrating apparatus before it reaches the separator, and the light component is drawn off axially from the gap between the rotating cylinder and a plate arranged outside it at right-angles to its axis.
