Abstract

For dyeing or printing acetate artificial silk, use is made of 4-cyano-2-nitraniline derivatives substituted on the amino nitrogen atom by an aryl radicle of the benzene series. Examples are given in which yellow dyeings are obtained from 2-nitro-4-cyanodiphenylamine (prepared from 1 - chloro - 2 - nitro - 4 - cyanobenzene and aniline) and 41 - methoxy - 2 - nitro - 4 - cyanodiphenylamine (prepared from 1-chloro-2-nitro-4-cyanobenzene and p-anisidine), and orange-yellow dyeings are obtained from 41-hydroxy-2-nitro-4-cyanodiphenylamine (prepared from 1-chloro - 2 - nitro - 4 - cyanobenzene and p - aminophenol). In general, the dyes are made by condensing aromatic amines of the benzene series with 1-halogen-2-nitro-4-cyanobenzenes, which may be prepared from 1-halogen-2-nitro-4-aminobenzenes by diazotization followed by treatment in known manner to replace the diazo group by the cyano group. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 indicates that the dyes may be used for colouring lacquers. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
