Abstract

488,969. Drying - chambers ; workrooms ; nonconducting coverings. HERAEUS GES., W. C. July 22, 1937, Nos. 20340 and 20341. Convention dates, July 29, 1936 and Aug. 12, 1936. [Class 20 (i)] [Also in Group XIII] A wall construction for an enclosure or chamber exposed internally to the danger of explosion consists, throughout its thickness, of a plurality of heat-reflecting foils which are adapted to rupture on the occurrence of an explosion, such foils being spaced apart and secured within a frame, without intermediate filling or stiffening means. The foils may be of aluminium or other metal, or of metallized non- metallic material which may be incombustible. The foils may be in the form of flat, crimped or pleated sheets and of less than 1/10 mm. in thickness. Foils 3, 4 secured in a frame 5 may be mounted in the framework 1 of a lacquerdrying cabinet as shown in Fig. 1. Such a cabinet is heated by means of an electric element 6, and comprises a perforated charging- plate 7, an outlet flue 8, and a door 9. The outer foils 3 may be flat and the intermediate foils 4 crimped. In a modification, a frame 15, Fig. 2, which is subdivided into sections or panels 12 for receiving the foils 13, 14, is mounted in an aperture in a wall 11 of a cabinet. The rupturing of the foils may be promoted by forming the intermediate foils 24 with vertical incisions 25 as shown in Fig. 3 ; these foils may, alternatively, be weakened by providing them with rows of holes or with sharp kinks. In the construction shown in Fig. 5, sharp-edged bars 32 are provided against the outer surface of the outermost foil 33 so that, on outward bulging of the foils 29, 30, 33 due to explosion, the foils will be successively cut through by the bars 32 ; wires may be provided instead of the bars 32. The door of the cabinet shown in Fig. 1 may be made very strong and fastened securely by stays mounted across its front. The invention is applicable to the walls, or parts thereof, of cabinets, chambers and rooms for drying purposes, and of work-rooms for use in the manufacture of explosives and aluminium powder. Walls which are, exposed to the weather are protected by the provision of thin rainproof skins, such as non-inflammable celluloid.
