Abstract

Threads, fibres, yarns, fabrics, ribbons, films, and like materials made of organic esters of cellulose such as cellulose acetate, formate, propionate, butyrate, or mixed cellulose esters such as cellulose nitrate-acetate, acetate-propionate, acetate-propionate-nitrate, or cellulose ether esters such as ethyl cellulose acetate, oxyethyl cellulose acetate, are saponified by means of an aqueous bath containing in solution two salts of a weak polybasic acid, these salts containing different molecular proportions of the acid radicle. The reaction of the bath is alkaline owing solely to the hydrolysis of one or both of these salts, the salt containing the lower proportion of acid radicle is present in an amount ranging from that theoretically required to produce the desired degree of saponification to twice that amount, and the salt containing the higher proportion of acid radicle is present in a proportion of 5-20 molecules to each 100 molecules of the salt containing the lower proportion of acid radicle. Examples of the two salts are trisodium or tripotassium phosphate with disodium or dipotassium phosphate, the sulphides of sodium, potassium, calcium, or barium, with the corresponding hydrosulphides, and sodium or potassium carbonate with the corresponding bicarbonate. In the Provisional Specification the amounts and proportions of the two salts are not limited. Specification 469,025 is referred to.
