Abstract

Ethylene oxide is caused to react with a cellulosic material in the presence of salts of alkali metals or of metals of the second group, or in the presence of salts of organic bases with inorganic acids. Examples of such salts are sodium, potassium, and zinc chlorides, magnesium perchlorate, barium sulphocyanide, potassium acetate, potassium carbonate, and benzyl pyridinium chloride. The ethylene oxide may be in the vapour or liquid state, and there may be present another liquid such as benzene, acetic acid, water, or glycol. The products of the reaction may be subjected to esterification and/or etherification. The following examples are given: (1) Sulphite cellulose is immersed in a 5 per cent sodium chloride solution, pressed and treated with gaseous ethylene oxide. The product may be benzylated. (2) Bleached rags are impregnated with 10 c.c. of a 50 per cent solution of zinc chloride, dried in a current of warm air, and treated with excess of liquid ethylene oxide. The product may be dissolved in caustic soda solution and coagulated in the form of sheets. (3) Low viscosity cotton cellulose is treated with a 5 per cent solution of magnesium perchlorate in anhydrous acetic acid, and ethylene oxide. The product is acetylated directly by adding acetic anhydride. (4) The zinc chloride of example 2 is replaced by 10 c.c. of 5--50 per cent solution of benzyl pyridinium chloride. (5) The salts of examples 1, 3, or 4 are replaced by potassium acetate.
