552,161. Sugar esters. BRITISH CELANESE, Ltd. Sept. 20, 1941, No. 12194. Convention date, Jan 15. [Classes 2 (ii), 2 (iii) and 15 (ii)] Sugar esters, in pure condition, are obtained by treating a sugar with an anhydride of a fatty acid containing not more than six carbon atoms, in the presence of an esterification catalyst, removing part of the reaction mixture by distillation and precipitating the ester by adding a dilute aqueous alkali. In an example sucrose is added to a mixture of acetic anhydride and sodium acetate which has been heated. After stirring, the product is heated to complete the acetylation and the excess acid removed by heating under reduced pressure. The product is poured into dilute caustic soda, and the ester separates as a solid on standing. Acetates, propionates and butyrates of sugars such as glucose, lactose, maltose and xylose may be obtained. The esters may be used as detergents either alone or with soaps, or as pigments or effect materials in paints and plastics. They may also be used in fibres, films or filaments made of cellulose acetate or other organic derivative of cellulose. When such fibres containing the sugar esters are subjected to a delustring treatment a voluminous matt effect is produced. Films or foils made of organic cellulose derivatives containing the sugar esters may also be used in the manufacture of laminated glass, fabric or other sheet material.
