Cellulose acetates; alkali-cellulose.-Cellulose acetates are saponified by the joint action of methyl or ethyl alcohol, pure or dilute, and an alkali or base in amount less than the equivalent of the acetic acid; the textile uses and dyeing properties of an acetate silk may thus be varied; the process may be carried out by covering the thread with alcohol, adding the fractional equivalent of caustic soda, and agitating or circulating the liquid until the desired result is attained; the resulting cellulose product contains alkali.
