Abstract

Azo dyes, forming on the material; regenerated celluloses, dyeing.--In the production of azo dyes on wool or on wool-cellulose mixtures by a process wherein the material is grounded with an alkaline solution of an arylide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid with addition of formaldehyde and subsequently developed with a diazo compound, the grounding bath contains X grams of caustic soda (or equivalent alkali) per litre, X being not less than 0,3 and not more than X1, where X1 = 0,8 log Z/K + 1,2 log Z x log K, Z being the quantity of the arylide in grams absorbed by 1 kilogram of cotton from an alkaline solution at 30 DEG C. containing 0,2 gram of arylide per 100 c.c. of liquor, the proportion of cotton to dye liquor being 1 : 20 and K being the quantity of the arylide in grams used per 10,000 c.c. of liquor. A table is given showing the value of Z for various arylides. Examples are given: (1) of the dyeing of wool a bluish red by impregnating for 1 hour at 30 DEG C. in an aqueous solution containing the 4-chloro-2-methylanilide of 2 : 3 - oxynaphthoic acid, alcohol, caustic soda, formaldehyde, sulphite cellulose waste liquor, the oleic acid ester of methyltaurine and sodium chloride, squeezing, developing for 1 hour in an aqueous bath containing the hydrochloride of 4-chloro-2-methylaniline, a reaction product from ethylene oxide and octodecyl alcohol, hydrochloric acid, sodium nitrite, sodium acetate and acetic acid, rinsing, treating at the boil with addition of the oleic acid ester of methyltaurine, soaping, if necessary, at 45 DEG C., rinsing and drying; (2) of the dyeing of a mixed fabric of wool and viscose artificial silk a uniform yellowish red by impregnating at 30 DEG C. in an aqueous solution of the arylide as in (1), squeezing, developing for 1 hour in an acetic acid diazo solution from 3-chloro-2-methylaniline containing a reaction product from ethylene oxide and octodecyl alcohol and after-treating as in (1).
