Abstract

Azo dyes are made on the fibre by using for the grounding operation a solution or suspension of a coupling component in which the quantity of alkali necessary for the formation of a stable solution or suspension of a salt-like product is wholly or in part replaced by a water-soluble nitrogenous base of the general formula R1--NH--R2 wherein R1= H or an aliphatic radical containing not more than four carbon atoms which is not linked to the nitrogen atom by a CO-group, and R2=a similar aliphatic radical, or by a salt of one of these bases having an alkaline reaction. The process is useful in dyeing acetyl celluloses, wool, natural silk or mixtures thereof with one another, or with vegetable fibres or regenerated celluloses. In examples: (1) acetyl cellulose is grounded in a solution containing the anilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, alcohol, caustic soda solution, oleylmethyltaurine and dicyandiamide, squeezed, developed with 4<1>-methoxydiphenylamine-4-diazonium chloride, rinsed, treated with a solution containing oleylmethyltaurine and sulphuric acid, rinsed, soaped and rinsed (navy blue); (2) a mixed fabric of cellulose acetate and viscose is grounded as above with the p-anisidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and using guanidine carbonate instead of dicyandiamide and developed as above with diphenylamine-4-diazonium chloride (navy blue); (3) wool is grounded as in (2) with the 2-methyl-4-chloranilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, the solution containing formaldehyde in addition, developed with diazotized 1-amino-2-methyl-4-chlorobenzene containing acetic acid and the ethylene oxideoctodecyl alcohol reaction product, and treated with solutions containing oleylmethyltaurine (red); (4) and (5) acetyl-cellulose is treated at 60 DEG C. in a bath containing oleylmethyltaurine, guanidine carbonate, the p-chloranilide of 2 : 3-hydroxy carbazole carboxylic acid or b -naphthol, alcohol, caustic soda, 1-amino-2-methoxy-4-nitrobenzene and acetone and developed with nitrite and acid (red-brown and red respectively); (6) m-aminoazotoluene is diazotized on acetate artificial silk and the bluish-red shade developed with b -naphthol dissolved in guanidine carbonate; (7) acetyl cellulose is grounded in a solution containing the 2-methyl-4-chloranilide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, alcohol, caustic soda, oleylmethyltaurine and ethylamine and developed as in (1) (blue); (8) acetyl cellulose is grounded in a bath containing oleylmethyltaurine, a mixture of guanidine, guanidine nitrate and guanidine carbonate (obtained by reaction of caustic-soda and sodium carbonate on guanidine nitrate), the p-anisidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid, alcohol, caustic soda and 1-amino-2-methoxy-4-nitrobenzene and the colour developed with nitrite and acid (bluish red). Other bases specified are mono- and di-methylamine, diethylamine, and ethanolamine. Specification 348,269 is referred to.
