Abstract
Filaments, threads, ribbons, and fibres of organic ester of cellulose are saponified at a temperature between 25 and 75 DEG C. by treatment with an aqueous solution of a mineral saponifying agent in the presence of an alkali metal salt of the acid of the ester, the concentration of the saponifying agent being such as would in the absence of the salt produce a pH concentration equal to that of a 0,25 to 2,0 per cent solution of caustic soda. The amount of alkali metal salt, e.g. sodium acetate, may be from 5,0 to 15,0 per cent. It is advantageous for the initial products to have a high tenacity, e.g. of at least 2 grams per denier. The initial materials may be subjected to shrinking or swelling. The saponifying bath may contain swelling agents, gelatine or other albuminous substance capable of forming amino acids by decomposition by the saponifying agent. Preferably, the saponification is effected as a bath treatment applied to running threads in warp formation. Specifications 389,823 and 428,224 are referred to.
