Abstract
Fabrics, yarns, and like materials comprising filaments, threads, or ribbons of organic esters of cellulose which have been stretched or twisted under the influence of steam or hot water are treated so as to saponify the cellulose ester content of the materials to a small extent. The conditions of the treatment should be such that the saponification extends to a substantial depth below the surface of the materials. The loss in weight of the material in the case of cellulose acetate should preferably not exceed 10 per cent and it may be as low as 3 per cent. The saponifying agent may be caustic soda, caustic potash, sodium silicate, methylamine, or ethylene diamine. There may be present modifying agents such as gelatine, albumen, casein, leucine, starch, dextrin, cellubiose, g cellulose, copper or other metal salts, alcohol, or swelling agents for the cellulose derivative. Threads which have undergone cr<\>zepe twisting may be treated and in the case of cr<\>zepe fabrics the saponification may be carried out subsequently to the production of the cr<\>zepe figure. With very dilute solutions of the saponifying agent, the treatment may be carried out at raised temperature.
