Abstract

Threads, filaments, ribbons, films, and like materials of cellulose acetate or other cellulose ester are treated under super-atmospheric pressure with a medium containing a mineral saponifying agent. The treatment may take place at a temperature above the normal boiling point of the solvent or other constituent of the saponifying medium. The saponifying medium may be an aqueous or alcoholic solution of caustic alkali; caustic soda containing sodium acetate; caustic soda containing gelatine, egg albumen, casein, leucine, aspartic acid, glutamic acid, proline, lysine, histidine, tyrosine, potato starch, dextrin, g -cellulose, cellobiose, sucrose, or glucose; barium hydroxide; sodium borate; sodium silicate; sodium carbonate; trisodium phosphate. The saponifying medium may contain volatile organic liquids such as methyl or ethyl alcohol, or acetone. Threads may be passed through a vessel containing the liquid saponifying medium, small holes formed in detachable perforated plates being provided for entry and exit of the threads without permitting excessive loss of pressure. The vessel may be provided with rollers for the threads and with heating coils. The pressure exerted by the vapour of the saponifying medium may be supplemented by supplying air or other gas under pressure. The threads may be stretched or allowed to contract during the treatment. Yarns may be treated in hank or other package form. The process may be applied to fabrics.
