Abstract

Materials of vegetable origin are bleached by means of a hypochlorite bleaching liquor containing an ester derived on the one hand from a sulphonated aromatic dicarboxylic acid and on the other hand from an alcohol containing more than two carbon atoms, or a salt of such an ester. The process is applicable to the bleaching, by means of solutions of sodium or calcium hypochlorite, of various materials of vegetable origin, e.g. vegetable fibres such as cotton, ramie, jute, flax or hemp, also other materials such as paper, straw, sulphite cellulose or ground wood, or artificial materials such as regenerated cellulose, e.g. viscose or cuprammonium artificial silk, or cellulose esters, e.g. acetate artificial silk. It may also be applied to the cold bleaching of vegetable materials which have not been boiled, e.g. loose raw cotton. In examples: (1) raw cotton is treated with a chlorine bleaching liquor containing the sodium salt of the amyl ester of sulphophthalic acid, and is then rinsed and passed through a bisulphite bath; (2) cotton piece goods desized by means of "Diastafor" or in some other manner are boiled under pressure with sodium hydroxide solution and then treated with a chlorine bleaching liquor containing the sodium salt of the ester of sulphophthalic acid with amyl alcohol or with a hydrogenated cresol. Specifications 370,845, 371,144, 372,855, and 399,320 are referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises the use of esters from sulphonated aromatic dicarboxylic acids and organic hydroxy compounds in general containing more than two carbon atoms. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
