Abstract
488,758. Soaking-pit furnaces. SADLER, A. L. (Keener, S. F.) July 31, 1937, No. 21269. [Class 51 (ii)] In a soaking-pit furnace such as is described in Specification 471,007 the refractory material b of the heat treatment chamber is enclosed by a metal shell c having at its upper part surrounding the charging throat a<1> a channel-sectioned ring j supporting by an angleiron bar j<1> a sand seal trough g which supports the cover d for the throat a<1>. The cover d is surrounded by an I-section annular member e formed with strengthening ribs e<2> and having attached to its under side a base plate e<1> and a plate f formed with an annular flange f<1> dipping into the trough g. The cover d may be raised or lowered by overhead gear running on rails k on an operating floor l which is mounted on beams k<1>, m carried by pedestals k<2> arranged externally to the shell c. The rails k may extend along a battery of furnaces for which a single cover-raising gear only is provided.
