Abstract
835,731. Shaft furnaces. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. March 26, 1956 [March 29, 1955], No. 9134/55. Class 51 (2). In a shaft furnace, e.g. a cupola or a blast furnace, a number of substantially annular watercooled shelves 13 extend inwardly of the metal shell 12 for a distance of nine inches to three feet, preferably 1¢ feet, so that, in operation, a protective layer 20 of charge material is formed in contact with said shell. The vertical spacing of the shelves is 5-20 feet, preferably 10 feet, and they comprise a number of sections formed of plates 15, 16 and 17 welded together and welded to the shell. Cooling water is continuously passed through said sections, and the shell is cooled by water sprays or other devices. Damaged sections may be removed by cutting away the effected section, and welding over the gap a plate carrying the new section, or the sections may be secured to cover plates riveted or bolted to the shell. A lining of carbon bricks may be fitted in the bosh or the whole shaft may be initially lined with refractory bricks, which are replaced by charge material as they wear. Accretions forming on the lining may be burnt away by admitting air or oxygen through tuyeres spaced around the shaft, or through holes cut in the shell. Specification 299,941 is referred to.
