Casting processes; moulds.-In the process of casting steel ingots according to the parent Specification, the heat is applied to the top surface of the ingot principally towards the periphery. The heat may be supplied by hot gases introduced through inclined openings h, by vertical or hori. zontal electrodes, or by a high frequency coil k, Figs. 5 and 6, arranged around the upper part of the ingot f. The coil may be tubular and fluid cooled and is spaced by insulating pieces which act as struts for the upper part a<7> of the wall a. The reinforcing rings a<4> of the cover and mould have gaps r, to reduce eddy-currents, bridged by straps s and intervening insulation t. In another modification the ingot is covered with coke, coal, &c. and air, oxygen, &c. is introduced through the openings h, Fig. 2.
