Abstract
721,065. Moulds. GRIFFIN WHEEL CO. Sept. 29, 1952, No. 24321/62. Class 83 (1). A mould cavity is defined by a number of graphite blocks through at least one of which passes a riser having a gas-permeable liner. A mould for casting a steel wheel is composed of two graphite blocks, the upper block 12 being clamped between annular rings 4, 6 and the lower block 20 between a ring 16 and a tray 22. The blocks are machined to define a mould cavity comprising a rim section 28, a plate section 30 and a hub section 32. A graphite sleeve 34 forming a gate extends through the block 12 from the cavity 32 and one or more risers extend upwardly through the block from the plate section, each such riser having a gas-permeable liner of, for example, core sand and a binder. The liner 42 may be formed by inserting a plug 44 of, for example, aluminium in the riser opening to define an annular cavity, and filling the cavity with the moulding mixture which becomes baked by heat from the block and from an electric heater 52 contoured to shape the bottom of the liner. A hole 56 is subsequently formed in the bottom of the cup 42. Specification 721,059 is referred to.
