Abstract
488,186. Tanks. HENDERSON, A. J. Jan. 2, 1937, No. 26798/36. [Class 69 (i)] A tank, particularly for use as a fuel tank on aircraft, ships, vehicles and the like, is formed of outer and inner metal shells 1, 2 with a structurally continuous core 3 of a light rubber compound vulcanized to both of the shells. The strength imparted by the core allows thin metal to be employed for the shells, the outer being, for example, of 30 gauge copper tinned on the inside or on both sides, and the inner of 26 or 28 gauge copper tinned on both sides. The core may be vulcanized to both shells simultaneously after assembly, or may be first vulcanized to the inner shell and subsequently, by means of a vulcanizing solution, to the outer shell. Split tubular stays 4 of, for example, 28 gauge tinned copper, which collapse under violent impact, may be secured between opposite walls by soldering.
