Abstract
507,862. Tanks. HENDERSON, A. J., FORECAST, C. A., and COATES, A. J. 13. Jan. 19, 1938, No. 1841. [Class 69 (i)] [Also in Group XXII] One or more folds 3 are in one or more of the walls of a thin sheet-metal fuel tank for aircraft &c., the folds terminating short of the full width of the walls and allowing expansion to occur on impact so as to avoid rupture. The folds may be formed as shown in Figs. 6, 8, by slitting the wall as shown at 12, 12a, 12b, at each end of the fold, then bending in the manner shown in Fig. 6, along the broken lines shown in Fig. 8, so that the portions 11a, 11b pass over each other, and finally soldering these portions to the adjacent marginal parts of the wall and soldering the edges 4 at the ends of the fold together. Perforated baffles 5 may be held in position so as to be released readily on impact by means of brackets 6 secured to the tank walls and passing through slots 7 formed by struck-up straps in the baffles. The tank may be surrounded by an outer shell with an intervening structurally-continuous core of a light rubber compound vulcanized to the tank and the outer shell.
