[Class 44] In a fastening for sliding panels or windows having an operating lever 7 and a catch 6 so pivoted together and mounted on the same side of a base plate 10 that the catch can be disengaged from a fixed catch 4 by pressing the handle portion 12 of the lever towards the base plate, the catch 6 being adapted to move independently of the lever to ride over and engage the catch 4, the lever 7 and catch 6 have engaging shoulders 15 and spring means acting in the unfastened position to press the shoulders together and to press the inner end 19 of the lever against a fixed abutment. In the fastened position the spring means maintains the .catch 6 in close engagement with the catch 4. The lever 7 and catch 6 are pivoted on a pin 8 carried by a base plate 10 mounted on the panel 2 by means of screws passing through slots in the base plate to allow its position to be adjusted. When the door is moved to its closed position the catch 6 moves independently of the lever 7 to ride over the catch 4. A spring 17, which may be a coil spring, has one limb resting against the base plate 10 whilst the other presses the catch 6 against the catch 4 in the fastened position and against the shoulders 15 of the lever in the unfastened position. A second spring, shown as a hair-pin spring, keeps the corner 19 of the lever in contact with the base plate 10. The Provisional Specification describes a coil spring having three limbs which keeps the shoulders of the lever and catch pressed together both in the fastened and unfastened positions.
