Abstract

A salt bath for case-hardening iron and steel comprises 10-50, preferably 15-45, per cent of sodium cyanide, 15-60, preferably 25-30, of barium carbonate, 4-15 of activated carbon of low combustibility, and from 15-70 of a salt molten at the case-hardening temperature, such as sodium or potassium chloride or a mixture of these salts, the amount of this salt being such as to render the bath molten. Barium oxide may be used instead of barium carbonate and the bath may also contain 15-30 per cent of barium chloride. The activated carbon may be that prepared by the processes described in German Specifications 453,972, 466,358, and 488,669. British Specification 386,076 and U.S.A. Specification 2,025,050 also are referred to.
