Abstract

485,529. Light - sensitive cells. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 8, 1937, No. 27402. Convention date, May 29. [Class 40 (iii)] A photo-voltaic cell comprises a base coated with selenium having a metal layer thereon, a contact ring on the selenium or on the metal layer, and a ring of a resistance substance between the contact ring and the base for increasing the resistance of the path for the current through the unilluminated portion of the cell and preventing short-circuiting between the metal layer and the base. The ring of resistance substance may be constituted by an excess of selenium between the contact ring and the base. The Figure shows a cell comprising a base 1 of metal such as iron or nickel, coated with selenium 2 on which is a semi-transparent metal layer 4 which may consist of cadmium and platinum, preferably applied by sputtering as described in Specification 485,530, or may be applied as successive layers. The selenium is preferably applied to the base 1 as a paste, the disc being placed in a fixture which has a recess of a depth suitable to accommodate the disc and the selenium layer of desired thickness. A scraper is moved over the fixture after the paste has been applied. The disc is then quickly cooled, is afterwards hot pressed, and is then heated to 180-215‹ C. for a suitable period. The excess of selenium, provided according to the invention, is accommodated in a groove 5 in the base plate. The contact ring 3, preferably made of cadmium and formed by spraying on to the selenium before the metal layer 4 is applied, is formed directly over the excess of selenium in the groove 5.
