Abstract
485,316. Partitions. HARRIS & SHELDON, Ltd., SANKEY & SONS, Ltd., J., and BUTLER, H. G. March 3, 1937, No. 6281. [Class 20 (iv)] A metal pillar for use in the construction of partitions comprises a pair of opposed channels 1, 2 having the openings thereof facing each other, and a pair of superimposed keying or connecting members 6, 7 arranged at an angle to each other across the space between the channels and adapted to be angularly drawn or pressed relatively towards each other in a vertical direction by a bolt or other means so as to tend to take up a horizontal position and thereby hold the channels together by a wedging or clamping action. Each of the channels is formed with a stepped base portion 3 and inwardly-turned side edges 4a, 5a. Both the members 6, 7 are of H-shape in plan, the member 6 being narrower than the member 7 and having rounded ribs 6b. The member 6 is so shaped and arranged that its side edges engage the outer faces of the flanges 4a, 5a of the channels, and the lugs 6b engage the outer faces of the side portions 4, 5 of the channels. The member 7 is so shaped that its end portions engage against the inside faces of the sides 4, 5 of the channels, and its inner side edges engage the inner faces of the flanges 4a, 5a, in this position, the member 7 is slightly inclined as shown in Fig. 3, and is connected to the member 6 by a bolt 8 and nut 9. The members 6, 7 may, alternatively, be connected by a U-spring clip. Cover plates 10, 11, which are adapted to cover the joint between the channels 1, 2, are provided with inturned edges 10a, 11a, whereby they may be sprung over the rounded ends of the lugs 6b.
