[Class 106 (i)] The volume of liquid in a vessel or reservoir is determined by the use of an auxiliary vessel containing the same or another liquid as that whose volume is to be measured, a predetermined relation being set up between the levels of the liquid in the main and auxiliary vessels. means being provided to measure the volume of liquid in the auxiliary vessel. The device is described as applied to the fuel tank of an aeroplane. As shown in Fig. 1, the main tank 1 and auxiliary vessel 2 are combined with liquid level measuring devices of known type connected by transmission lines 3, 4 to an indicating device with coaxially arranged pointers 5, 6. The tank and vessel are of similar shape and are so placed that changes of position of the aeroplane produce substantially the same variation of position of the levels in the two vessels. Communicating with the vessel 2 is a flexible tube 8 and a tube 7 adjacent a graduated scale 9. In operation the tube 7 is displaced so as to bring the pointers 5, 6 into coincidence whereupon the volume in the tank can be read off on the scale 9. Instead of using the movable tube 7 a pump may be employed to vary the level the stroke being a measure of the volume. In the form shown in Fig. 3, the liquids, which may be of different densities, act on a piston 10 in a cylinder 11, the displacement of the piston being read off on a scale 18. As shown in Figs. 5, and 6 the auxiliary vessel is constituted by tubes 20 arranged in the main tank. In Fig. 5 the indicating member is a piston 10, in Fig. 6 the piston is replaced by a membrane 12 which acts on a system of levers 24 co-operating with a rheostat 26 and indicating instrument 27.
