Abstract

Liquid-level prcssure gauges.-In a U-tube pressure gauge used for measuring the flow of fluid in Venturi apparatus &c., the cross-section of one of the limbs of the U-tube can be altered automatically to correct the gauge for variation in specific gravity of the fluid under measurement. The indicating leg in which is a float connected to indicating means has attached to it at right-angles a hollow body Z of rectangular crosssection, in which moves a rectangular piston K. The medium to be measured acts on a spring piston in a little cylinder F, the movement of the piston being transferred by a linkage X to the piston K to vary the cross-section of the indicating leg of the gauge in accordance with the pressure, and therefore the density of the fluid. As an alternative to the linkage X, toothed segments as shown in Fig. 2 may be used. As the movement of the mercury in the gauge is proportional to the square of the velocity of the fluid, it is necessary to extract the square root of this movement. To do this the mechanism shown in Fig. 3 is provided.. The movement of the float is converted into an angular movement of a shaft A' and movement of this shaft is transferred to a second shaft A<2> by means of a pair of rack levers a, b, the curves of which are constructed according to the relationship #=K#a where a and # are the angles made by the vectors with the line A<1> A<2>. The lever b carries the registering pointer.
