Abstract

341,306. Measuring the quantity of liquid in a closed container. SCHISKE, R., 22, Pilgrimgasse, Vienna. Feb. 13, 1930, No. 4881. [Class 106 (i).] Comprises a method and means for determining the liquid contents of closed vessels by measuring the free space above the liquid. V<1> denotes the free space above the liquid in the chamber V and A is an auxiliary vessel in communication with the vessel V and constructed as a suction pump. The auxiliary vessel B is a suction pump of stroke " h." A liquid gauge D is connected to the vessel V and chamber B. An indicating pointer Z on the piston rod of the vessel A moves over a scale S. Relief valves K and L are provided as shown. In the normal position, Fig. 1, the piston of the vessel A is in the lowest position, and the piston of the vessel B in a predetermined position, the valves K, L are open and the liquid levels at the same height in the limbs of the manometer. The valves are now closed and the piston of the vessel B is drawn up to the extent " h " to create a partial vacuum. The piston of the vessel A is then moved through the space J to make the manometer levels again equal. If P0 is the pressure in the vessels V and A and if the auxiliary pressure is P1, then V1. P0 =(J + V1) P1. The ratio of P1 to P0 is kept constant say c, then V1 = cJ./l-c The value of c can be ascertained if the member B is cylindrical, the initial space in front of the piston being m and the volume of the stroke n. Then mP0 = (m + n) P1 and P1 =cP0, therefore c =m/m+n.Substituting for c in the first formula V<1> = Jm/n . The free space in the container V is proportional to J as the cross section of the vessel A is always the same and is known. The liquid volumes required may be read off on the scale S.
