Abstract

481,889. Washing-machines. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., WILLIAMS, G. A., and BRECKNOCK, H. Sept. 18, 1936, No. 25462. [Class 138 (ii)] In a washing-machine having an oscillating agitator 7, to prevent overrun of the agitator shaft 3 when the direction of rotation thereof reverses a friction device is provided to act on the shaft during all the time that the transmission gear is clutched to the shaft. In the form shown a friction disc 31 bears on a shoulder 31a formed on a sleeve 21 pinned to the shaft and formed with clutch teeth 19 engaged by teeth 17 on a pinion 13 forming part of the transmission and slidable on the shaft. The friction disc is secured to or is acted on bv a washer 27 which is acted on by spiral or other springs 23 housed in a hub 25 standing up from the bottom of the tub 9. The clutch 13 is operated by a lever 15 from the exterior.
