Abstract

465,219. Washing-machines. McBRIDE, D. Feb. 12, 1936, No. 4218. [Class 138 (ii)] The shaft d of the agitator g of a washing- machine is provided with spiral grooves d4 with which engage spring-pressed balls h<1> housed in radial recesses in a nut f through which the shaft passes. The nut is rotatably mounted in a boss c secured to the washing-machine cover, and an operating lever a is secured to the nut whereby on oscillating the lever in a horizontal plane the shaft normally oscillates therewith and, when the agitator meets with obstruction, also moves axially to an extent limited by a washer d2 on the shaft below the nut and a knob d<1> above the nut. The agitator comprises three downwardly inclined blades of which the outer ends are semicircular or semi-elliptical in plan and convex upwardly in section, the edges of the blades being beaded, g<2>, Fig. 3.
