Washing - machines with closed or enclosed rotary receptacles. - The rotary clothes - receptacle is provided with a pivoted diaphragm which serves as an agitator and squeezer during rotation, and which may also be manually raised to facilitate the removal of clothes. The perforated drum 10 on a shaft 23 mounted in a casing 5 is rotated through a clutch from a bevel-gear loose on the shaft meshing with a gear on a driving- shaft. The perforated diaphragm 45 which is curved and of a width about onethird of the circumference of the drum is pivoted about a shaft 47 supported by extensions 15<a>, 20<a> from the bearing-members 15, 20 of the drum and has at one end integral therewith a lever 53 with a projecting roller 55 which, upon rotation of the drum, strikes a cammember 63 pivoted at one end 57 and held at the other by a tension spring 59, and traverses a slot between this member and a lower fixed cammember 65. To raise the clothes for removal through an opening 11 normally closed by doors 12, the diaphragm is operated by the engagement with the roller of a pivoted lever 72 by means of a handle 74. The drum may have a flattened wall-portion 70 to engage with the free end of the diaphragm to cause the clothes to be deflected thereon, the upper edge of this portion being adjacent to the opening 11, and the diaphragm may be provided with lifters 71. In a modification, the diaphragm may form a part of the outer wall of the drum, resting on stops in the outer position.
