Abstract

The wetting-out properties of alkali solutions used for the treatment of natural and artificial cellulose fibres are improved by the addition of mixtures of phenolic substances with aliphatic, cycloaliphatic, araliphatic and aromatic monoamines or their quaternary ammonium compounds or salts thereof which contain besides aliphatically combined hydroxy groups at least one terminal hydrocarbon radicle containing at least two carbon atoms. In examples, the phenolic compounds employed are technical cresol and xylenol mixtures, monochlorinated cresols and o-brom-p-cresol and the monoamines and quaternary ammonium compounds are: dihydroxyethyl - n - propylamine, dihydroxypropyl - di - n - propylamine, hydroxy ethyl - di - n - propylamine, mono(dihydroxypropyl)-n and iso - butylamines, di - (hydroxyethyl)-n-butylamine, mono- and di-(hydroxyethyl) - isoamylamine, mono-(dihydroxypropyl) iso - amylamine, tri - iso - amyldihydroxypropylammonium chloride, di-(dihydroxypropyl) di - iso - amylammoniumchloride, dihydroxypropyl - di - isoamylamine, dihydroxypropyl-2-aminopentane, 3-isoamyloxy - 2 - hydroxy - 1 - aminopropane, di-(hydroxyethyl)-aminopropylbutylether, mono - (hydroxyethyl) - benzylamine, dihydroxypropyldiethylamine, dihydroxy ethylcyclohexylamine, monohydroxyethylaniline and a mixture of amines obtained by treating the amines derived from naphthenic acid amides with glycide. Specification 364,844 is referred to. The monoamines may be prepared by treating aliphatic, araliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic monoamines containing at least one hydrocarbon radicle with at least two carbon atoms with halogenhydrins, e.g. ethylene or glycerin chlorhydrins or epichlorhydrin or with ethyleneoxide, propylene oxide, butylene oxide, glycide or glycide ethers. Suitable monoamines may also be obtained by treating hydroxy bearing tertiary amines with aliphatic, cycloaliphatic or aliphatic esters of mineral acids. Di-(dihydroxypropyl) di-iso-amylchloride may be made by reacting di-dihydroxypropylisoamylamine with isoamylchloride.
