[Class 81 (i)] [Also in Group III] Clear stable aqueous solutions of phenols, naphthols, menthol, and substitution products of these for use as antiseptics or in medicine are prepared by using, as solution promoters, cation active substances having a soap-like action which contain high molecular alkyl groups and are derived from weak cyclic organic bases. Suitable solution promoters are quaternary ammonium compounds having a high molecular alkyl group attached to the nitrogen atom, such as alkyl pyridinium hydroxides, similar compounds derived from quinoline, isoquinoline, pyrrole, aniline &c., and the halides, sulphates, nitrates, acetates and other salts of these. According to examples (1) a mixture of chlorxylenol, p. chlor-m-cresol, chlorthymol and chlorcarvacrol is mixed with alkyl pyridinium chloride (the alkyl residue corresponds to the alkyl residue of coconut oil fatty acids), water and alcohol, to give a solution to be largely diluted with water for use ; (2) p-chlor-m-cresol or chlor-m-xylenol is formed into a solution with water and alcohol with addition of alkyl pyridinium chloride, alkyl quinolinium sulphate or alkyldimethyl phenyl ammonium bromide. Specification 393,276 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 relates also to the preparation of aqueous solutions of insoluble or difficultly soluble substances in general, specifying camphor rotenone, pyrethrine, derivatives or substitution products thereof and vegetable extracts. An additional example relates to a solution containing camphor, lauryl-quinolinium chloride, water and alcohol. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
