Abstract

The affinity of regenerated cellulose filaments, fibres, and films to cotton dyestuffs is increased, without introducing combined nitrogen into the cellulose, by subjecting the undyed materials to a swelling treatment with a water-soluble organic nitrogenous base in which each atom of carbon directly attached to nitrogen is also directly attached to three other atoms, or, when the nitrogen atom is doubly linked to said carbon atom, to two other atoms. Suitable materials for treatment are saponified threads or fabrics of cellulose acetate or other ester, or materials produced by the viscose or cuprammonium process. Particularly useful are materials of high tenacity obtained by a stretching process. A number of nitrogen bases are specified, and these may be applied in vapour or liquid form, or in solution in a non-hydroxy organic liquid, e.g. acetone, diacetone alcohol, dioxane or methylene ethylene ether, or non-hydrotropic liquid, e.g. benzene or chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbon, or in an alcohol, e.g. methyl, ethyl, propyl isopropyl or benzyl alcohol, or preferably, in aqueous solution. The treatment may be carried out with or without shrinkage or stretching of the materials. Specification 345,989 is referred to. According to the Provisional Specification, the process is applied also to the treatment of cellulose of vegetable origin, and to the base there may be added small quantities of heavy metals, e.g. iron, cobalt, nickel, zinc or silver, or other swelling agents, e.g. thiocyanates, perchlorates, iodides, bromides, or nitrates.
