Abstract

Voile or similar fabric of light construction containing a cellulose ester or ether is treated with a dilute solution of a water-insoluble cellulose ester or ether having solubility characteristics different from those of the material constituting the fabric, the solvent employed having substantially no action on the material of the fabric. The coating is preferably applied as a solution of less than 5 per cent strength. The solvent is preferably evaporated whilst the material is maintained in a stretched condition. The treatment may be repeated several times. The solution may be applied by padding, spraying or immersion. In an example, a cellulose acetate voile fabric is drawn through a 2 per cent solution of benzyl cellulose in benzene, and is then passed through a tenter device and the solvent evaporated. In a further example, a voile fabric made from cellulose acetate yarn which is soluble in acetone but insoluble in chloroform, is passed through a 1 per cent solution of chloroform-soluble cellulose acetate dissolved in pure chloroform, and the chloroform evaporated; organdie fabric is obtained.
