[Class 60] A grinding-machine for cutters such as arc used in engraving-machines comprises an electrically driven grinding tool 3 mounted in a standard 1, and a compound slide workholder 46 mounted by an arm 31 and a support 27 adjustable about vertical and horizontal axes 32, 26 on a sleeve 25, which is clamped by a handle 28 to a rocking bar 5 arranged parallel to the grinding spindle 2 in the machine frame. The angular movement, of the bar 5 is limited by an arm movable between a rubber stud on the standard 1 and an adjustable set screw 8. The bar 5 can be adjusted axially by rotating the cap 19 of a micrometer screw, idle movement being prevented by a coiled spring 9. The support 27 is clamped to the sleeve 25 when adjusted by a handle 29. An abutment 38 on the arm 31 limits its movement about its pivot 36 by engaging stops 39, 40 on the head 35 of the support 27. The stops may be withdrawn to an inoperative position. A scale ring 37 adjustably clamped to the arm 31 carries another stop 41 also coacting with the stops 39, 40. The arm 31 carries the work holder 46 by slides 45, 47 which are movable transversely and axially in respect to the tool and are fitted on the adjustment and firing screws 48a, 48b. The cutter 50 to be ground is mounted between jaws 51 which are mounted non-rotatably in a tube 49 carried by the work-holder 46 and are clamped by a nut 52. A lock disc 56 is adjustably secured by a nut 58 to a scale ring 57 keyed to a tube 55 coupled to the tube 49. The disc 56 is formed with radial grooves 61 and stops 62. A spring pin 63 in the work holder is adjustable to project to three different amounts. In one position the pin 63 engages one of the grooves 61 ; in another rotation of the work is allowed until the pin engages the stops 62 ; in the third the work can rotate through 360‹ . The cutting tool is positioned in the holder initially by a withdrawable stop 59 having a radial face 60 engaging the flat face of the tool. The grinding wheel is trued by a diamond 68 mounted in a holder 69 secured in the jaws 51. A tool drawer is provided in the base of the machine.
