GRINDING ATTACHMENT FOR REAMERS.

My invention relates to improvements in devices, appliances, or attachments which are designed to be connected and used with grinders or grinding machines, and consfsts essentially of a main-supporting memher or knee that is attachable to a fixed member of a. grinder, and carries the other parts and members or elements of the attachment, a carriage slidingly arranged on said knee, with actuating means for said carriage, a table slidingly arranged on said carriage, with actuating means for said table, and a work holder mountedon and pivotally connected with said table, adapted to be adjusted thereon about its pivot, and consisting in part of direct supporting and centering means for a reamer while being ground, which means is adjustable, together with Such other parts and members as may be necessary or desirable in order to render the attachment complete in every respect, all as hereinafter set forth.
The main-supporting member or knee of this attachment is designed to be secured preferably to the front side of the grindingwheel. stand of a grinder, and the movable and adjustable parts and members supported by said knee are adapted to support and carry a reamer in operative position relative to the grinding-wheel of such grinder, and while said reamer is beingground. The carriage is capable of having imparted thereto a cross feed or in-and-out movement, while the table is capable of having imparted thereto a feed or movement at right-angles to said first-mentioned feed or movement.
The primary object of my invention is to produce an appliance which is adapted readily to be attached to or connected with a grinder, and when so attached or connected to carry a reamer in grinding posi-' tion relative to the grindingewheel of-such grinder, said appliance being simple both in construction and operation, convenient, and
captil ile of so supporting and moving a reamer during the. grinding operation that said reamerris expeditiously and accurately ground. The appliance as a whole is as readily detachable fromthe grinder as attachable to the same.
Another object'is to produce an attachment of this character which is so constructed such member remaining permanently in place, and consisting of the knee hereinbefore referred to.
A furtherobject is to provide the attachment with means whereby straightblade, tapered, and even spiral, reamers can be ground and sharpened,
Still another object is to afford the ati tachment with means for easily and quickly adjusting the parts and members thereof to whatever extent may be required.
The attachment is strong and durable without being heavy and cumbersome.
Other objects and advantages will. appear in the course of the following description;

The main-supporting member of the at-' tachment is in the form or" a knee 9 which is provided at the rear end with upwardlyand downwardly-projecting flanges 50 and 51, respectively, that are bolted, as clearly shown at 10 in Figs. 1 and 5, to the'front in the under side with a transverse slot or giiideway of a shape and size which is adapted to receive the guides 11, so that said cariage can slide back and forth on the knee 9 whilebeing securely held in place thereon. A shim 13 is provided as usual between the inclined side of one of the guides 11 and the adjacent inclined side of the slot in the carriage12. There is a longitudinal slot 14: in the knee 9, and a horizontal, screwthreadedbushing or nut 49 is securely fixed in the front end of said knee, in'the vertical center thereof. 7 v
The carriage 12 is arranged on the knee 9 in such a manner that'the ends of said carriage project some distance beyond the sides of said knee. Extending longitudinally through the carriage 12, and opening through thetop thereofiis a slot or guideway provided to receive a guide 15 on the under side of a. table 16, said guideway and guide having inclined sides similar to the sides of the guides 11 and the slot which receives the same, and a shim 17 is also provided as in the other case. A rack 18 is cut in the under side ofthe-table116 in the longitudinal center thereof. The rack 18 extends. some distance to the left from the right-hand end of the table 16.. Journaled in the carriage 12 is ashaft' or spindle 19. The spindle 19 extendstransversely of the carriage 12 and is located adjacent to the right-hand end of said carriage. v Secured to the spindle 19 in positionto intermesh with the rack i 18 is a gear. 20, the czirriage 16 being recessed o at 21 to accommodate said gear." The spin dle 19 extends beyond the front side of the carriage 12, and a.handw heel 22 is secured on this protruding terminal of said spindle.
Upon rot ating the spindle 19 intone .direc-- ti'on, ,by .means ofthe hand-wheel 22, the gear 20causes the rack 18 with it the neeaaea table 16 to be actuated in one direction on the carriage 12, and, upon rotating said spindle in the opposite direction, said table is caused to be actuated in the opposite direction.
An angular member, which forms an apron 23. projects forwardly from the front side of the carriage 12 in the vertical center thereof, and then downwardly. A screw 24: passes through the depending arm of the apron 23 and through the nut 49 into the slot 14: in the knee 9. The screw 24 is provided at the front end with a hand-wheel 25, andthere is a nut 26 on said screw behind the depending arm of the apron 23. The hub of the hand-wheel 25 is in contiguity with the front side and the nut 26 is in contiguity withthe back side of the afore said arm, consequently said hub and nut prevent the screw 24 from moving longitudinally. When, therefore, the hand-wheel 25 and screw 24: are rotated in one direction, said screw, being in engagement with the fixed nut 49, carries the apron 23 and with it the carriage 12 forwardly, and, when said hand-wheel and screw are rotated in the opposite direction, said carriage is actuated rearwardly.
A. work holder .is adjustably mounted on the bed 16, and said holder comprises a base 27 from which arise a pair of 'split bearings 28, a horizontal rod or bar 29 mounted in said bearings, arms 30 and 31 each having a split'hub 32 that is mounted on said bar, a centering member 33 carried by said first-named arm, and a centerin member 34 carried by said secondrname arm.
The work-holder base 27 is pivoted centrally at 35 to the table 16, and in said base adjacent to the ends thereof are two arcuate slots 36, said slots being struck from the axial center of the pivot. The superficial area of the base 27 corresponds with that of the table 16, consequently the slots 36 open onto said table. A bolt 37 passes downwardly through each slot 36 and is taped into the table 16, a washer 38 being interposed between the head of said bolt and the top of the base 27 Upon loosening the bolts 37, the base 27 can be swung about its pivot 35 in either direction to the extent permitted by said bolts and the ends of the slots 36. After the base 27 has been thus no adjusted to l the extent required, the bolts 37 are again tightened to hold said base sccurely in'its new relationship or position on the table 16. Adjustment of this kind is necessary when a tapered reamer is to be ground. v
I The bar 29.,extends] lengthwiseof the, base 27,:projectsbeyond the split bearings; 28, andmay be adjusted on its axis or lengthwise in said bea/rings to'whatever extent may be desired. 1 Bolts 39' -39 pass through the forward split portions of the bearings 28 and are tapped into the rear split portions thereof, and when said bolts are tightened the split portions are drawn closer to ether and caused to grip the bar 29 with su cient force to hold the same securely in place. Additionalbolts 39 are provided for and similarly applied to the split hubs 32, for the purpose of fastening said hubs rigidly to the bar 2-9, and enabling the hubs to be adjusted endwise and circumferentially 'on said bar.
The arms 30 and 31 extend downwardly and rearwardly from the bar 29.
The centering member 33 is arranged horizontally in the free terminal of the arm 30 and parallel with the bar 29, said member being tapped into and through said arm so thatthe former can be adjusted to increase or decrease the space between it and the centering member 34. The centering member 33 is provided with an angular head 40 to facilitate adjusting said member with the aid of a wrench or other implement. A thumb-screw 41 is tapped into the arm 30 in position to enable the same to engage the centering member 33 for the purpose of locking the same after adjustment. The centering member 34 is fixed in the free terminal of the arm 31 in proper position,
and projects from the inner face of said arm as the centering member 33 projects from the inner face of the arm 30. The arms 30 and 31 must necessarily be adjusted so as to locate the axes. of the centering members 33 and 34 in the same straight line. Y
The reamer 7 is placed in the holder,
' while the centering member 33 is retracted,
by permitting the apex of the centering member 34 to enter the center hole at the leading end of said reamer, and then rotating the centering member 33 in the direction necessary to cause the same to move inwardly or to the right until its apex enters the center hole in the opposite end of said reamer, when the thumb-screw 41 is tightened. The reamer7 is now carried on and I between the centering members 33 and 34,
with the axis of said reamer in line with the axes of said members, and can be rotated on the supports thus provided. The construction and arrangementof the parts are tapped into and through the outer face of the arm 31 in position to engage said rod. Upon loosening the set-screw 46, the rod 42 can be adjusted on its vertical axis, or raised and lowered, to whatever extent. may be necessary, or removed from the arm 31 altogether. The head 44 is secured to the horizontal arm of the rod 42 by means of a thumb-screw 47, and upon loosening said thumb-screw said head may be adjusted outwardly or inwardly and on the axis of said arm. The finger 45 is secured to the head 44 by means of a thumb-screw 48. The finger 45 or at least the lower terminal 'portion thereof is preferably resilient. By means of the several adjustments just described, the finger .45 can be set to engage with its lower edge the tooth 8 which is on the back side of the reamer 7 and approximately in the horizontal central plane thereof. This is the positionin which each tooth 8 is ground, and the finger assists in holding the reamer with the tooth being ground in proper position during the grinding operation. After one tooth is ground,

the finger yielding as the second tooth passes the free end of said finger into position under the same.

The reamer 7 being of the ordinary type havingteeth the cutting edges of which de scribe a cylinder, it is necessary that the work holder be positioned with the longitudinal edges of the base 27 in parallel i-e- I lation. or coinciding with the corresponding edges or sides of the table 16. When, however, the reamer to be groundis tapered or conical, it is necessary to adjust the holder on the table 16, in the manner hereinbefore explained, to the extentnecessary to position said reamer, assuming that the latter be in place between thecentering memers 33 and'34, at the proper angle to the axis of the grinding-wheel 6 to enable said. wheel to grind the teeth of said reamer at the required angle longitudinally. The reamer and holder are adjusted together since the. former is supported by the arms 30 and 31 from the bar 29, which is rigidly mounted on or in said holder.

It will be clearly apparent, from the description heretofore given, that the bar 29, with the arms 30 and 31 and the indexing device mounted on said arm 31,- together with the reamer supported by the centering members at gthe free ends of said arms, moves longitudinally with the base 27 and the table 16 when the latter is actuated in either direction. v
The attachmentmay be used for grinding tools other than reamers, or for any purpose for which the same is adapted.
