Abstract

575,303. Grinding. RATCLIFFE, W. E. Feb. 17, 1944, No. 2978. [Class 60] Apparatus for dressing grinding- wheels to radius or angular form for use in grinding tools, &c. comprises a slide-way 1, mounted on a base 2 so as to be adjustable thereon about a vertical axis and set by a scale 4, and having adjustable thereon a headstock 5. On the headstock 5 is mounted a head 7, adjustable about a horizontal axis as set by a scale 8, and having thereon a boss 37 in which is rotatable, about an axis at rightangles to the axis of the head 7, a spindle 9 set by a scale 10. The head carries two stops 11 to limit rotation of the spindle to 180‹, the spindle being rotated by a knob 12, which carries a slidable stop pin 13 engageable in a slot 14 in the head to limit rotation of the spindle to 90‹ ; a locking device 15 locks the spindle 9 in adjusted position. Attached to one end of the spindle 9 is a tool holder 16 of square section, having an off-set part 17 with its parallel faces parallel to the axis of the spindle and spaced therefrom at known distances, so as to assist in the setting of a gauge 24. In the end of the tool holder is a V-groove 19 in which is secured, by a cap 21, a diamond tool 22 carrying a diamond point 23, which is set by the gauge 24; the gauge has a stem fitting in a hole 26 in the too] holder and a limit piece 25. In a modification, the tool holder is slidably mounted in a block mounted on the end of the spindle 9 and is movable at right-angles to the axis of the spindle by a pin carried by a crank, the shaft of which extends axially of the spindle and is rotated by a knob, stop screws being provided for centring the slide.
