Abstract
612,420. Grinding cutting-tools. SOC. FRANCAISE BEDAUX..July 13, 1945, No. 18001. Convention date, Aug. 9, 1944. [Class 60] In a machine for grinding a clearance groove in a cutting-tool T, the tool carrier is movable vertically by means of a micrometer nut and screw device and the grindstone G also is adjusted vertically. The tool is clamped in a carrier 32, with its cutting edge parallel to the movement of the slide 7, and the grindstone and its driving unit, which may be an air turbine, is clamped in a holder 46, the axis of the grindstone being parallel with the axis of the holder. The traverse of the tool past the grindstone is effected by a hand-member 12 on a shaft 10, carrying a pinion 9 which engages a rack 8 on the slide 7. Adjustments in a direction at right angles to the slide are effected by moving the slide 3, on which the slide 7 is mounted, by means of the handle 4 on a screwed shaft. The slide 7 is spigotted at 14 to locate a support 13 revoluble thereon but lockable in its position of adjustment by screws 15. The micrometer screw adjustment consists of an internally-threaded member 25 and an externally-screwed ring 17 located on the support 13 by a spigot 18 and a retaining-plate 19 which is secured to the support 13 by screws 20 and engages a shoulder 21 on the ring. The ring is turned by a projecting pin 23 and is locked by a screw 26. A disc 28 is coupled to the support 13 by pins 29 which pass through the plate 19, and the member 25 is similarly coupled to the disc 28 by pins 30, so that the member 25 and the support 13 are locked against relative rotation. The member 25 has a slideway mounting for the tool carrier 32 which is clamped therein by screw means. The sleeve 46, for carrying the grindstone, is mounted for adjustment by tilting, locking to its support 42 being effected by clamps 47. The support 42 is non-rotatably slidable on a hollow vertical column 41 by a hand-wheel 44 and screw 43. A gauge is provided for positioning the tool relatively to the grindstone, and consists of a block 35, slidable in a guide 34 on the side of the member 25, and carrying a vertical removable gauge rod 36. The slide is clamped by a screw 38 and the rod 36 by a screw 37. In operation, the cutting edge of the tool is arranged parallel to the slide 7 and the grindstone is lowered to touch the cutting edge. The part 51 of the gauge is then contacted with the cutting edge and the tool, with the gauge, is moved towards the grindstone until the grindstone contacts with the part 52 of the gauge 36, which is then moved aside by unfastening the screw 38. The tool is then reciprocated under the grindstone by the handle 12, and feed is put on by rotating the ring 17. The gauge 36 may have a number of faces, each suitable for a grindstone of a certain diameter. The grindstone may, when used in a tilted position, be of pencil form, operating endwise.
