Abstract

Emulsions for rendering fabric translucent comprise a translucing agent emulsified or dispersed in an aqueous dispersion of a colloid which is insoluble in water or is readily converted into water-insoluble form. Suitable colloids are casein, glue and gelatine which are rendered insoluble by formaldehyde; albumen, which may be rendered insoluble by the action of heat or formaldehyde; and aqueous solutions or dispersions of cellulose or near conversion products, e.g. viscose. In examples, (1) cotton cambric is padded with viscose mixed with an aqueous emulsion of beeswax; (2) chlorinated rubber in powder form is gradually added, with vigorous agitation, to a solution of coconut oil in xylol dispersed in water and the resulting emulsion is applied as in (1); (3) and (4) fabric is treated with an emulsion of coconut oil or petroleum jelly in an aqueous borax solution of casein.
