Abstract

509,174. Starch; sizes. HALWARD, A., and MURANYI, P. April 5, 1938, No. 10427. [Class 121] [Also in Groups III and VIII] Aqueous dispersions of unsaponifiable substances, e.g. paraffin wax, other natural and artificial waxes, bitumens and oils, are obtained with the aid of modified starch alone as an emulsifying agent, with glue, casein or the like as protective colloids. The starch used as an emulsifying agent is highly degraded, by means of an agent other than alkali, but not beyond the limit at which the blue iodine reaction still appears, and a small quantity of alkali, between 0.1 and 0.2 per cent of the total weight of emulsion, is added to the dispersion after the starch has been degraded. A suitable degrading agent consists of an aryl-sulphochloramide, e.g. the sodium salt of toluene-p-sulphochloramide. According to an example, the starch may be first degraded in a heated kettle, after which paraffin wax may be added, or the starch and wax may be added together. Caustic soda solution is then added, and finally the protective colloid in the form of alkali caseinate solution. The cooled mass may be added to paper pulp in the beater, the wax being subsequently precipitated by means of alum &c. The products may be used for sizing and waterproofing paper, textile fabrics and similar fibrous material.
