Abstract
Aqueous emulsions of paraffin wax are obtained by heating paraffin wax with an emulsifying wax such as esparto wax, wool wax and Montax wax, and a preformed 10 per cent rosin soap solution, the total amount of water present during emulsification being between 20 per cent and 50 per cent of the weight of the mixture and the emulsification being carried out without the use of colloid mills or high speed stirring apparatus. For example, 64 kgm. of paraffin wax, 26 kgm. esparto wax and 110 litres of 10 per cent rosin soap solution are boiled together for about 45 minutes. The resulting emulsion may be diluted with water. Other materials may be added, e.g. starch and animal glue, fungicides or colouring matters, either during the emulsification of wax or added as emulsions to the wax emulsion. The products may be used for beater- and surface-sizing of paper and paper pulp and for impregnating and coating porous materials such as paper, wood or stone.
