Abstract

An aqueous emulsion of resin and paraffin wax is obtained by heating the wax and resin in the presence of water, but in the absence of protective colloids or alcohols of high molecular weight, to form an intimate mixture which is then dispersed by boiling with aqueous alkali hydroxide or carbonate without agitation by any other means. According to examples (1) 15 lbs. caustic soda are dissolved in 15 gallons water, and to the hot solution are added 180 lbs. resin and 20 lbs. paraffin wax. The mass is then boiled until emulsified, and the concentrated emulsion may be diluted with hot water. (2) 20 gallons water, 200 lbs. resin and 200 lbs. paraffin wax are boiled together until homogeneous. 20 gallons hot water containing 16 lbs. soda ash is then slowly added and boiling continued. 120 gallons warm water are added to dilute the hot emulsion, giving a product containing 20 per cent solids which may be further diluted with cold water. In the above examples the softened resin adsorbs the wax before dispersion begins. Other dispersing agents, other than organic p colloids, alcohols or soaps, may also be added, e.g. montan wax. In this case, 150 lbs. resin, 50 lbs. montan wax and 100 lbs. paraffin wax are boiled with 20 gallons water containing 15 lbs. soda ash. To obtain special effects, suitable materials other than those referred to above, may be added, e.g. Carnauba wax may be added to impart hardness and gloss. The emulsions may be used as sizes in paper making, both beater and surface sizing, or for impregnating and waterproofing paper, strawboard, cardboard, yarns and fabrics, woodwork or stone or as a diluent for paints and inks. Specifications 28178/10, 23468/11, 299,381, [all in Class 81 (i)], and 333,620, [Class 96], are referred to.ALSO:An aqueous emulsion of resin and paraffin wax is obtained by heating the wax and resin in the presence of water, but in the absence of protective colloids or alcohols of high molecular weight, to form an intimate mixture which is then dispersed by boiling with aqueous alkali hydroxide or carbonate without agitation by any other means.
