[Class 39 (i)] To initiate the main discharge positive ions gener. ated by an auxiliary discharge are con centrated on to the liquid cathode 2 by means of a magnetic or electrostatic field. The auxiliary discharge is produced between a thermionic cathode 6 anc an anode 7, anc the positive ions are concentrated by using separately or together one or more negative diaphragms 8 and a coil 9. Con trol of the moment of starting is effected by controlling the auxiliary discharge
